FINAL PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING FOR THE JOINT GHANA–CÔTE D’IVOIRE MARITIME BOUNDARY INSPECTION

The final planning committee meeting for the Joint Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire Maritime Boundary Inspection was held on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, at the ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F. The meeting brought together key stakeholders from both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire in a consolidated in-person session to conclude a series of virtual planning engagements conducted over the past several months in preparation for the inspection.

The meeting served as a unified platform to finalise all operational, tactical, logistical, administrative and coordination arrangements required for the successful execution of the joint maritime boundary inspection. Representatives from the various institutions involved actively participated in discussions, providing inputs and working collectively to resolve all outstanding issues ahead of the exercise.

In his opening remarks, the Director of MMCC Zone F, Navy Captain Daniel Gnamien Ehu, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their sustained commitment and contributions throughout the planning process. He highlighted that while Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire share a common geographical environment, the maritime domain presents complex operational dynamics that require continuous coordination, careful planning and mutual understanding.

He further underscored the importance of the inspection in strengthening bilateral cooperation, enhancing maritime security and ensuring the effective management of the shared maritime boundary. He also commended the Ivorian delegation for their in-person participation in the final planning session, describing it as a strong demonstration of both countries’ commitment to the success of the exercise.

The Commissioner General, Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Anthony Ntem, also addressed the meeting, expressing gratitude to MMCC Zone F for its continued support in facilitating regional maritime cooperation. He acknowledged the Centre’s role in hosting and coordinating the final in-person planning session and commended all stakeholders for their dedication to ensuring a successful inspection.

Major General Ntem emphasised that the success of the exercise would depend largely on effective cooperation and coordination between Ghanaian and Ivorian authorities. He therefore urged all parties to ensure that every outstanding operational, logistical, administrative and related matter was fully resolved prior to the commencement of the inspection.

Commander Quansah then led a detailed review of the tactical and operational components of the exercise. He engaged representatives of the Ivorian Boundary Commission and other stakeholders in discussions to harmonise proposed tactical manoeuvres, operational procedures and coordination mechanisms to be employed during the inspection.

The meeting provided a critical opportunity for both countries and participating agencies to align their plans, clarify roles and responsibilities, and address any potential operational challenges. The active engagement of all stakeholders reinforced the shared commitment to ensuring a safe, well-coordinated and successful maritime boundary inspection.

The final planning meeting concluded with a unified understanding of all operational and logistical requirements, as well as a renewed commitment by both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire to maintain close collaboration throughout the inspection. The upcoming exercise is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations, enhance maritime security and improve coordination along the Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire maritime boundary.
