The Director of the ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F Captain Navy Daniel Gnamien Ehu today received the Project Manager and Deputy of INTERPOL’s WATA and AGWE Projects for a high-level discussion focused on strengthening cooperation and enhancing maritime security efforts within the Gulf of Guinea.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to deliberate on future plans, operational collaboration, intelligence sharing, and strategies aimed at improving coordination between INTERPOL initiatives and the ECOWAS MMCC Zone F in addressing maritime threats across the region.
Project WATA, an INTERPOL initiative designed to enhance maritime security, combat transnational organized crime, and counter terrorist attacks in West Africa, focuses specifically on five Gulf of Guinea countries namely Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo. The initiative continues to play a significant role in supporting regional maritime law enforcement and security frameworks.
Project AGWE, also an INTERPOL initiative, is dedicated to enhancing maritime law enforcement capabilities and combating transnational crime through stronger cooperation, capacity building, and coordinated operational responses among maritime stakeholders.
The discussions emphasized the importance of sustained partnerships, information exchange, and joint efforts in ensuring safer maritime spaces within the ECOWAS region and the wider Gulf of Guinea. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration towards achieving collective maritime security objectives and addressing emerging threats at sea.
